Torche & Boris - Chapter Ahead Being Fake (2009)

New split by Torche & Boris. Torche's "King Beef" is a sludgey track with pounding drums while Boris' track "Luna" is a mix psychedelic melody, haunting vocals, and Atsuo pounding out blastbeats(!) throughout the track, very unusual track even by Boris's standard.

Pretty unique album here, a blend of noise rock but there a moments of beauty, melancholy, and catharsis in this album. I was taking a walk when listening to this album and it blew me away. The last track on this album "Big Drop" is phenomenal to say the least. Fans of experimental, noise rock should check this album out.

Wolves In The Throne Room - Black Cascade (2009)

Even since I heard Two Hunters by Wolves In The Throne Room, I knew they were different from other black metal bands. Yes, you still get the traditional black metal sound, but combined with the atmospheric/ambient elements on that album, it puts the album on a whole different level. Black Cascade is the follow-up two 2007's Two Hunters and it follows solidly on the footstep of Two Hunters. With the traditional tremolo picking and hypnotic guitar lead played on top of the pounding drum, Black Cascade takes you on a fantastic journey.

Aidan Baker & Tim Hecker - Fantasma Parastasie (2008)

When I heard about a collaboration between Aidan Baker and Tim Hecker, two of my favourite ambient/drone (or whatever genre you think they are) artists, I could barely contain my excitement. In a way, I feel I am a little let down by Fantasma Parastasie, maybe due to my high expectation of this album. Yes, you get the signature guitar drone of Baker and the electronic synth, hiss and cackle of Hecker. Separately, these two artists create phenomenal music, but it seems like something is missing on this collaboration. Anyways, this is still a good album if you are a fan of these artists but in my opinion, a little underwhelming effort.

Tim Hecker - An Imaginary Country (2009)

The seventh album by Tim Hecker, like 2006's Harmony in Ultraviolet, features layers of melody hidden among layers of electronics. This album will be released on March 10, 2009. This album is very similar to Harmony but does not seem to be as tumultuous and is generally quite peaceful. Although not a far departure from Harmony, it is still an excellent album by Tim Hecker.

Dømkirke is a live album by drone band Sunn O))). Recorded in a cathedral in Bergen, Norway during the Borealis festival. This 2xLP also features Attila Csihar (Mayhem) on vocals, Steve Moore (Earth) on organ, Lasse Marhog (Jazzkammer) on electronics, and T.O.S. on keyboards. This album features the signature guitar drone of Sunn O))) with the addition of organs. These instruments, combined with the live setting in a cathedral, brings a certain favour to this record.

Nadja - Radiance of Shadows (2007)

Nadja is a drone doom band based in Toronto, Canada featuring Aidan Baker (vocals/guitars/electronics) and Leah Buckareff (bass/vocals). They are often compared with Sunn O))) and Earth but their sound is similar to ambient artists such as Fennesz and Tim Hecker, but with more of a metal sensibility. Radiance of Shadows is my personal favourite Nadja record. At times, the music is violent, conjuring an image of an intense snowfall similar to the one on the album art. Suddenly, the music dies down, halting the snowfall for a few moments before it begins again.

My favourite metal release for this year, this self-debut album by Krallice features Mick Barr (Orthrelm) and Colin Marston (Behold... The Arctopus). This album is similar to materials by Weakling and early Ulver, but is more technical in nature. Definitely get this album if you are a fan of Black Metal. The standout track from this album is definitely the 15-minute album closer, "Forgiveness In Rot". The first 10 minutes of the song begins with pounding riffs, slowly building tension, until a maelstrom is released during the last 5 minutes of the song.
